Replaced my monitor with a monitor (instead of a TV) (6 posts)

I finally got tired of trying to do pixel perfect work on a pixel imperfect display, so I replaced my 40″ LCD TV with a 24″ LCD monitor. I’m still in the process of getting my living room entertainment system arranged, but I am pretty happy with my new computer display.

I bought the HP ZR24w from Amazon for a hair over $400 bucks, and it’s nice to be back in the sRGB space rather than the extended gamut of entertainment monitors and TVs. The ZR24w is an IPS panel but with old school cffl lighting so it does produce some heat, but is the least expensive way to get into an IPS panel. Also, it is one of the few on the market that puts out the right range of colors for the kind of work I do. I’ll be spending the next few weeks getting acclimatized (and yes, Middle Earth seems smaller now) but my initial reaction is that it is nice to be home!

Side note, can anyone recommend a component hookup for the Wii so it looks as nice as possible when I connect it to a 1080p display?

There where some nice and cheap e-IPS panels around last I checked. At least at the 22″ size. I’m still using two Dell 2209WA’s and love them. I picked them up for about $210 each. On one hand I am very happy I switched from the TN monitors and I’m starting to appreciate what my monitor snob friend has been telling me for years. On the downside it’s going to be much more expensive when I finally decide to upgrade from 22′s.

The HP you got is a very nice looking monitor. If I had the discount at HP that I do at Dell I’d be tempted to switch.

For the Wii on a monitor etc. I use the componenet cables that came with it, my westinghouse had like ever imaginable scheme for conecting things, componenet, s-vidio, HDMI, etc. Works like a charm, even Netflix looks “teh awes0me”; FWIW, Netflix over Wii looks much better than the PS3 version.

I’ll look around again, but I’m pretty sure mine just came with composite hookups rather than component ones (1 yellow for video rather than the 3 rgb ones). I’ll double check.

I probably would have bought a similar monitor as you Vinny but I was looking for something with a more standard “computer res” since it feels less constrictive for doing real work than 1080p does. Even still, I’m considering adding my old 17″ on the side as a secondary display.
