Was talking to some friends that are still gaming quite a bit these days, and when we the discussion turned to VOIP programs they brought up Mumble (http://mumble.sourceforge.net/). After many years of dedicated use of Vent and TS they came across this program and now swear by it.

The programs has a very low latency level, in line with that of a phone. The in-game overlay and auto normalization is more user friendly. I’m not knowledgeable on the whole bandwidth issue, but their FAQ mentions that a 20 person server w/ 2 people talking at once requires 1-3 Mbits/s. Not sure how that compares to hosting a Vent or TS server.

    Has anyone used this program?

I’m only familiar with Vent. By familiar I mean that I have figured out how to talk and listen. :P

I’m going to check it out, and I’m not sure on the bandwidth comparison either. The main issue with hosting one on my server would be bandwidth/month and from the sounds of it, it would only take 10-15 2 hour 5-player sessions to hit my monthly payment’s worth of traffic. But a few test runs shouldn’t dent it.
